The Metro Transit Police-through the Metro Citizen Corp program-provides CERT members a training program that teaches how to react to emergencies ranging from rail safety to identification of terrorist activity. The Metro Citizen Corps program provides CERT volunteers with crucial training that facilitates a more orderly response to major service disruptions by improving the passenger evacuation process and managing the extreme level of pedestrian congestion that are associated with Metro emergencies. The course focuses on Metro's impact on the National Capital Region, the nature of emergencies, emergency management concepts, response to weapons of mass destruction, evacuation and emergency traffic control. If a disaster/emergency were to occur while a graduate of the Metro Citizen Corps program was riding the Metro Subway, the CERT volunteer has the knowledge and skills to help himself and his fellow passengers while they wait for first responders to arrive.
To be eligible to be a member of the Metro Citizen Corps you must pass a security background check, be an active Fairfax County CERT member, a regular Metro rider, a U.S. Citizen, and 18 years of age or older. Each class is made up of no more than 22 participants.
